Incidences Among Horses
Colic was the second only to old age as the
greatest cause of equine death, according to
a recent report. **
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National
Health Monitoring Systems (NAHMS)
released information from its Equine 1998
health study of the equine industry. The
study collected data from full-sized breeds
nationwide at 1,034 operations with three or
more resident horses. The animals were
monitored for a variety of diseases. Study
highlights included:
Infectious upper respiratory
disease (IURD)
Younger horses were at greater risk to IURD
- 3 to 7 percent of foals less than 6 months of
age developed the disease, as opposed to
1.1 percent of horses over 5 years old.
Horses developed IURD most often in
springtime.
38 percent of large operations (with at least
20 horses) developed IURD, as compared to
12.4 percent of smaller operations (with 5
horses or fewer).
Colic
Colic was the second greatest cause of
equine death. The top cause was old age.
4.2 events of colic were found for every 100
horses.
Thoroughbreds were much more likely to
develop colic (10.9 cases per 100 horses),
compared to stock horse breeds (3.5 cases
per 100 horses) or other breeds (2.9 cases
per 100 horses).
